So we were hit with the ever so predominant RSV bug. Where we got it, I will never know. None of the kids at Gavin's home daycare are sick and I hope to keep it that way! It all started, I believe, Tuesday afternoon/evening. Miss Jenny said Gav took a 3 1/2 hour nap and was still cranky when he woke up, which wasn't like him. I came home, late, from an awful and exhausting day at work to find Gavin in a horrible mood. So, we played for as long as I could stand the fussing and finally gave in and put him to bed. Well, he woke up around 4am crying and wheezing. I rocked him back to sleep, but he wouldn't let me put him down. Knowing that he needed his sleep more than I, I rocked him until 6am and brought him down to have Keith listen to his breathing and lungs with his stethoscope. Keith didn't hear anything in his lungs and he seemed to be getting better as the hour passed. I took Gav to my mom's on Wednesday morning since I had to work and Keith was on shift at the station. I told mom I would call the pediatrician when they opened, just to be safe, and to call me if he got worse. He did and she did. So, I met them at the pediatrician's office around 1:30 (just in the nick of time due to the holiday). They told us he had RSV and sent us home with their LAST breathing machine since we wouldn't be able to get one due to the holiday. Even Walgreens was low on the solution for the breathing machine because so many kids have RSV right now! We were told to come back Friday morning to see our doctor, since he was off on Wed., and to return the breathing machine since they would need it for the office.

They gave Gav a breathing treatment in the office to hold us over until our breathing machine could be delivered to the house. They said it shouldn't take any more than 4 hours and to call the office if we hadn't received it. Well, four hours had passed and he was in desperate need of treatment as I was giving him treatments about every 2 and half hours and they were supposed to last 4 hours. So, Keith ran him up to the fire station to get him a treatment (twice). Our poor little guy was so exhausted from trying to breathe that Keith thought he would just bring him home and put him down for a nap. He wouldn't have it. He hadn't eaten since 7am and it was now going on 3, so we tried a bottle, which he sucked down, along with all of the other snot in his nose and as soon as Keith sat him up to put him in bed, he threw up all over the place. Now, he was tired, hungry and dehydrated.

We had had enough...we called the pediatrician. Keith stayed behind to clean up the projectile and I took Gav and headed to Children's Hospital ER. After several hours, several tubes, suction, fluids, tubes, suction and discussion of admission, we finally headed home. Our little guy was simply wiped. Oh and did I mention the breathing machine finally showed up as Keith was walking out the door to head to the ER...7 hours after our initial breathing treatment at the pediatrician's office. Nice, yeah! Gav slept pretty good last night and woke up feeling better this morning on a pedialite diet...we did the best we could. He seemed to be feeling much more like himself, so we tried some fruit for breakfast and he still did well, so we did stage 2 foods for lunch(they are watery and easy for him to swallow)...he took down 2 jars and did fantastic, so for dinner, I thought we'd hit two more jars of food...WRONG! It wasn't 1 minute since we finished dinner and he threw up all over the place. Back to pedialite for bedtime. To put a cherry on top, his temp has spiked back up. They say that day 3 and 4 are the worst, so hopefully we will be on the uphill, for real, in the upcoming days. I have to give props to Keith...he handled the puke, crying, fussing and clean up like a champ! He didn't complain or even give the slightest sigh of frustration...not even once! These are the times where I wish I was a stay-at-home Mommy and I didn't have to worry about anything other than the world that surrounds my sweet baby boy. THANK GOD I have an awesome job with the flexibility and understanding to do what I need to do, when I need to do it and to put my family first...especially my baby. I am blessed in that way. To all you mommies and daddies out there dealing with this unkindly virus called RSV, I'll pray for you...you're going to need it!
