Yes my friends, I'm a Teeny-Bopper, Team Edward, Hopeless Romantic that is entertained by the FANTASY Romance novels written by first-time author Stephanie Meyer. Inspired by a story that came to her in a dream, Stephanie made us all teeter between our love of Edward, his romantic notions and dreamy disposition {or the "idea" of Edward} and the rugged, buff, fun-loving Jacob...and so began the creation of the phenomenon known as Team Edward {Vampire} vs. Team Jacob {Werewolf}.
At first, I didn't understand the hype. I thought it was a bunch of teeny-googoo-gaagaa girls drooling over some stupid character in another cheesy teen novel and to some degree, it probably is such. I pushed away the offers to borrow books and begin the saga. I rolled my eyes. I sighed and didn't understand what all the fuss was about and then finally, I got tired of everyone talking about it and agreed to at least read the first book. My friend kept telling me, "If you don't read the through the first book in less than a week, I will be shocked." Again, I rolled my eyes and accepted the book. She was right! I couldn't put it down. I read it in three days...the fastest I have read a book in a long while. Not because it was inspiring, not because I was falling into a cult, not because I wanted to really learn about Vampires and Werewolves, but because it was so entertaining and captivating and romantic...leaving me wanting to know more about the relationship that was building. And just like that, I was in...give me the series, please!!
We are all captivated by fairy tales, forbidden love stories and happy endings that date all the way back to Romeo and Juliet, even if they died in the end. Our husbands hate the dramatic romance novels, movies, commercials and notions that bring them to stand before such high expectations. You know what I am talking about...the jewelry commercials at Christmas...the unimaginable, breath-taking marriage proposal...etc...not to say that our significant others are incapable or have not achieved a higher level of romance, but let's be realistic...they do not LITERALLY gallop in as a white knight that draws his sword and rescues the princess from the tower. Yes, we may be rescued in our own way, but it's probably not, verbatim with the fairy tales, which is why they are called "fairy tales." So, we become intrigued by the notion of unparalleled love stories.
The saga stages characters as Vampires, Humans, or Werewolves, but is really a story about Forbidden Love. Two individuals coming together, from separate worlds, fighting against all odds to obtain their happily ever after. Like any fantasy-fiction novel or mystery novel, it leaves you wanting more...more romance...more love...more victories over battles said to be too difficult to face, more risks in order to reap far greater rewards. In my most humble opinion...It's not about a belief in the super-natural vampire or werewolf. It's about the interest in a forbidden love story, fighting against all odds to claim a happy ending.
So, yes, I stood in line to sit in a theatre for 7 hours with my girlfriends to watch 3 of the movies, back to back. Yes, you can call me names like teeny-bopper. Yes, you can say I wasted 9 hours of my life. Yes, you can throw your stones {but you might step out of the glass house}. Yes, you can judge. You can be like me and roll your eyes. You may not be into romantic novels or love stories. You may not believe in happy endings or Love, for that matter. I don't really care. I live my life and engage in the things that make me happy, that make me a little more hopeful for Love, that make me have laugh and have fun with my girlfriends. It's like I told my parents, while growing up, we could be doing much worse!
The novels were entertaining to read. The movies are getting better with each passing film {although I am still NOT a fan of Kristin Stewart} and I am excited to see the final book come to life on the big screen.
