About Me

My photo
I have a wonderful husband and bouncing boy, who is growing faster and faster as the days go by. I love to play with him and watch him learn and grow. My two boys are the things I am most proud of in this world and I love them to pieces...like father...like son!

Peanut Butter and Benedryl Sandwich?!?!

Wait!!! It's supposed to be Peanut Butter and Jelly, what happened?!?! Who knows?? Gavin has had ritz peanut butter crackers before so I assumed he was OK with peanut butter. I did not give him some random cheap brand...it was JIF, a well known brand.
Gav had been so sick and on such a bland, strict diet, that I thought I would put a small (when I say small, I mean less than a teaspoon) amount of peanut butter on his toast, for dinner. He seemed pleased since all he had been eating was bananas, toast, crackers, water and milk for the past 4 days. A little PB was very welcomed!! He ate about half of his piece of toast and was walking around getting a little fussy and sounded really raspy. I told my Dad that I had hoped he was not getting an upper respiratory infection because, of course, I forgot to pack his breathing machine. My Dad pulled out his paci to listen and see if he was wheezing and OH BOY...not only was he wheezing, his lips were swollen, blotchy, red and he had hives everywhere. Did I pack benedryl? You better believe it. Was it in his backpack...NO! We were out at my Aunt's house and I had left his benedryl at my Gram's house. Ahhhh, we were out in the country, at least 10-15 minutes from a store...too far for my comfort. Now I had benedryl for myself and an EPI pen for myself and another child there had an EPI pen. He wasn't that bad yet, but he was getting there. We threw him into the bath tub with Baking Soda and crushed up the correct dosage of MY benedryl (Thanks AUNTIE GIA!!! ~ You are always there when I need you!) and gave it to him in crushed form. Thanks goodness for my benedryl or we would have probably been dialing 9-1-1. I learned the hard way, you don't mess around with allergic reactions! Once the benedryl was in and the baking soda was washing away, the reversal process had kicked in FULL gear.
Whew, what a scary moment. I have been in his shoes and know how scary it is to experience an allergic reaction, but I could at least communicate my reaction, he could NOT. With his week long, unexplained illness and now THIS...come on now, could this kid get a break on this vacation?? Poor thing. I felt so bad for him and me and anyone else around us cause I was super stressed and physically and emotionally exhausted. I want a redo vacation!!!
Needless to say, NO peanut butter for a while, we will just have to keep trying small bits at a time and with plenty of children's benedyrl on hand. Do I have benedryl stocked in the backpack now...you better believe it...lesson learned!!!
